Field Description: Mission Training Centers (MTCs) are the heartbeat and central focus of the theological and pastoral training and development of local lay pastors and evangelists in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya (ELCK). Since very few of the local leaders are able to attend seminary due to costs, distances, life-stages, previous lack of academic credentials, etc., MTCs take on the responsibility of training and developing these local lay pastors and evangelists (most of whom are worker priests) to be the Lutheran theological “brain trusts” and the shepherds for the local congregations which lack pastors and evangelists.
In addition, these MTCs are called “mission” training centers for a specific reason. They not only teach and train leaders to be lay pastors and evangelists, but do it in the context of a missional understanding of that call to serve and work in that capacity. In that regard, leaders who attend the MTCs “graduate” as missionary lay pastors and evangelists, not just lay pastors who might get involved in mission. The foundation of a strong church is its leadership. MTCs develop the people who will lead the ELCK into the future. Funding of this project provides for the construction of a small structure, food and transportation for students, teaching materials, and curriculum.
